OK, the title is somewhat of a lie. There's really almost nothing to DIY here; what I'd really like to tell you about is a way to get something free for your kids. I'm an avid re-user and re-purposer who prefers things to be the low, low price of *free,* driving around the day before garbage day and grabbing (perfectly good!) wood furniture, picking through post-garage sale piles, and generally being the recipient of free things that my acquaintances give me because they know I will take them. Novella Carpenter, in her supremely entertaining memoir Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, refers to herself and her boyfriend as "bottom feeders" when they engage in such practices. I prefer the term "scavenger." It has almost a pirate-like sound to it, don't you think?
