Random Sunday

I'm operating on about 9% of my brain power right now, so instead of doing something ridiculous like drink a cup of coffee at 10:18 at night, I'm just going to ramble and share some recent and minor goings on:

**There was no Self-Portrait Saturday yesterday. I remembered at about 11:00 at night, at which point I realized the camera battery was dead and the charger was still in the car from our trip to New York. Oops. I then looked through my photo files to find a recent photo that I hadn't already used for a Self-Portrait Saturday. And there were...exactly zero. This is precisely the reason I have created this ritual.

**I spent yesterday afternoon knitting with two lovely friends at a new breastfeeding store with a cafe inside. Do you want to know what it's called? Melons and Clementines. Can you believe they actually went ahead with that name? How awesome.

**There is a squirrel who has decided that our balcony garden is his new lunch spot. He has now eaten all but one of our tomatoes. I didn't even know squirrels ate tomatoes. Is this normal? To my long list of "things to do differently in the garden next year," I now have to add "figure out how to keep the damn squirrels away."

**We made homemade ice cream tonight with a friend's Play and Freeze Ice Cream Maker. It's like a giant hamster ball that you fill with ice and rock salt, with an inner chamber for the cream, sugar, and other ingredients. The end result was ridiculously delicious. I now understand the big deal about making your own ice cream. I also now understand why I SHOULD NOT OWN ONE OF THESE.

Good night all! I'll now enjoy the sound of the rain while reading myself to sleep (which will take approximately 45 seconds...)

The squirrels ate just about everything in my garden last year too. Including my rose buds! Someone told me to sprinkle red pepper flakes all over the place. I think it worked. Most of the time anyways.

Oh, I've seen those ice cream makers - they look awesome - and very dangerous to own!

For the tomatoes, if the squirrel is only eating the ripe ones you can pick them a little green and put them upside down on your windowsill - they will ripen perfectly. That's the only way we ever get to eat any of our tomatoes, and the reason I have yet to eat a single blueberry or strawberry...

Great. Now I want and ice cream maker, too.

For rodents, blood meal works. It is essentially scenting your garden with death to keep the critters away. It works awesome, you have to re-dust the perimeter when it rains but we swear by it. We have yet to fight an animal for a harvest. Now...bugs that is a different story, you know hwy my pumpkins rotted from the inside out? :(
