A Blogiversary and a Giveaway

Wow, breaks are nice, aren't they?--even from something you enjoy. I originally intended to finish my holiday blogging break early last week, but I got so caught up in cleaning our house for the new year and hanging out with the chicks that I kept stretching it out.

And now, it's time for a blogiversary. A year ago today I sat down and began "Two Chicks and a Hen," a blog whose title came from Ninna who observed that, in our home that newly housed three instead of four, we were, in fact, two chicks and a hen. She doesn't know she named the blog, nor that the blog exists for that matter, but she did.

I cited several of my reasons for starting this blog here, but looking back, I realize there was a bigger reason that trumps all of those: I wanted to feel normal. Four months before I sat down and composed my first post, I had become a single mom. The image of myself as part of a family that I held so sacredly in my mind was shattered. Still deeply valuing family, and still wanting to uphold the ideals I'd always held as a mother, I vowed to myself that my parenting values and goals would stay, come hell or high water.

I didn't know what that meant for how things would turn out (and only a year and a half into this journey, I still don't), but I did know that the random collected tidbits about life in single-parent homes that floated around in my mind, when added together, formed a composite that differed greatly from the life I envisioned for my chicks. And so I've had to reformulate my vision for our lives while addressing (and sometimes ignoring, if I'm to be totally honest) those fears about what might happen.

And what better way to take note of my small successes in maintaining normalcy than to record in words and images the small things that keep us on our path to a simple, sustainable, creative life than to put them down in a blog?

The icing on the cake is that some other nice things have come along with this record I've been keeping of our lives. I've so enjoyed sharing things with my readers and receiving feedback. I've made several "blog friends" and had some great ongoing conversations with the awesome people who come and read my blog. My projects have been featured on some fun sites like The Crafty Crow. And I've even become the regular single parenting contributor for Simple Kids--something that, a year ago, would not even have been on my radar.

So as a way to celebrate, and as a thank you to all of you lovely people, I've decided to follow in the blogiversary tradition of offering a giveaway! I'm so excited to send something fun off to one of you out there. All you need to do is leave me a comment telling us about one of your goals for the new year. I'll draw a number at random on Monday, January 9th, and that person will be the lucky recipient of this (courtesy of our overflowing book and craft supply collections):

**For you or a parent in your life:Happy Times Together: Simple Fun Activities and Yummy Recipes to Share with Children

**For your little people or some you know:The Do-It-Yourself Project Book

**And some crafty goodies to play with

If you like what you read here at Two Chicks and a Hen, it would really make my day if you joined up as a follower and/or subscribed to my blog in your blog reader. My statcounter shows me that there are lots more of you coming than are visible, and that many of you are coming back again and again. I'd love to be able to "see" you and even more would love to know who you are and why you've taken the time to read about our journey.

Have a lovely, wonderful, simple, sustainable, and creative new year! Thank you again for joining us. It means so much to me. I'm excited about things to come in the new year, both online and off, and I love it that we can share our journeys together in this platform.

You know I am a follower and a huge supporter of you! I have always watched you knowing that you would be great- but following and watching you grow into such a strong woman is breath-taking! I admire how you have handled everything and how you continue to take the high road and do what is right for the chicks. I sometimes find myself thinking, WWJD (and that J would be for your friend) because you are an amazing mama. I hope that loads of people follow you and do that blog reader thing (though I don't know what a blog reader is)... I also think (that this being your anniversary of sorts- that you need to print this blog for the chicks to enjoy one day. You are capturing their history. They are two lucky ladies... all for now dear friend! Happy New Year- I have a feeling that there are loads of blessings in store for you and I feel very lucky to be 'watching' (and of course commenting... if I don't comment it means I missed a post somewhere... ok- sorry for the novella!
Love ya!

Congratulations on your Blogiversary!

I started my blog for similar reasons, though I'm not a parent. I enjoy putting my thoughts down and being able to recall them later. I especially love when people leave comments. Sometimes they come from the stangest places. All the more evidence that our world is getting smaller, right?

One thing I am planning to do is write more about our alpacas and the process of caring for them and our growing business.

Two Chicks and a Hen is one of my must read blogs, and has been for quite some time.

Happy New Year to you all. :-)

What a lovely, honest blog post. I am so happy for you and your accomplishments over the past year, and as someone who has known you for many, many years, I am immensely proud of you! I suppose one of my goals for 2011 is to actually use the blog that I created when my son was born. You (along with Laura) are my blogger role model :)

Sending you lots of great wishes for the new year. We miss you all. I often think of your 'chicks' and the few hours I got to spend with them and what a joy it was. They are beautiful kids and such a reflection on how important parenting is in the development of our children. I often think about what a different place this world would be if more parents were able to and willing to devote such time to rearing their children. If this blog helps you to record your thoughts and feelings, I'm sure it also helps other parents clarify and reflect on their own.
All the best to you and the family.

Congrats! I also started my blog over a year ago for similar reasons. The day to day goes by so quickly I wanted a way to record it and keep me mindful of the way I set out to parent my children. My goal for this year is to blog EVERY day. I have the best of intentions and my mind is always flowing with things to write about. Time to Make it happen! Love reading your blog, keep it up!

Happy Blogiversary! I started my blog as a way to remember these years that go by so quickly, and I've thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog this past year.

I wrote a goals post for the year that I think you saw already, but my overarching goal is to make our home a place of happiness, learning, creativity, and love.

Happy Blogiversary! I love reading your blog because it gives me hope. :-) I'm currently going through a divorce and have a 2 yr. old son, and it has been (and still is) really hard to hold onto the thought that we are still a complete family, and remembering we are just changed and not "broken."

I like reading about you and your girls because your life together seems to be very similar to the life I would like my son and I to have together. So, now I'm a subscriber via my google reader! Thanks for the inspiration.

Love this blog! One of my goals for this year is to find a way to work only 4 days a week, so I can spend more time with my not-such-a-baby-anymore. Of course, this is in addition to all the regular basic goals of simplifying, decluttering, finding balance, doing more yoga, drinking more water, avoiding sugary sweets (yum)... its exhausting just to think about! ;-)

Happy Anniversary Jaimie! I have been following your blog since you posted about making a dolls bunk bed from a change pad. I had no idea everything you have been through in the past 18 months. I love your blog its simplicity, freshness and honesty.

I found your blog this week, and I just want to say thank you! Reading through your blog gives me a lot of much-needed hope, and I will definitely be a regular reader now. :)

As far as New Year goals... even though it's a bit of a cliche, I REALLY want to declutter, organize and beautify my house. A lovely, clear space is so peaceful to me!

I'm a newish reader, but I really love your blog :) My new year's goal is to be kind - to myself, my family and my community. And to also teach my two year old what kindness means. Erin

I just found your blog via SouleMama.

Tomorrow my partner and I are expecting our first baby to be born, I guess my goals for the year are to be a good mama and to try to maintain balance.

Thanks for this giveaway. Lovely blog you have here.

One of my goals for the new year is to get my drivers license. Last year I quit smoking and became vegetarian getting my license should be a breeze. Mind you I have been saying that for well...sixteen years now lol.
Also, I am a happy follower and even comment now and again lol. Also, I plan on doing a Friday five of creatively frugal blogs, do you mind if I feature yours?
Happy week!

Congrats on your blogiversary! One of my goals for 2011 is to run a 5k. I have a treadmill collecting dust and I don't run. So this should be a challenging one for me.
