A week or two ago, the chicks were crabby. Or whiny, or just...off in some way. You know what I'm talking about. I had already tried some of my other crabbiness cures--food, water, and reading stories--and I needed to get some work done around the house. I took the rocks from the rock basket, one of those lovely free sets of toys my kids pilfer from mother earth pretty much every time we go outside, and set them up in a little washing station. It was very simple--two buckets of rocks, a container of water with a drop of castile soap, and two rags.
They loved, loved, loved it. And they were quite proud of their accomplishment at the end, when their rocks looked so shiny and nice. I didn't get an after photo because I was actually managing to accomplish something around the house, shocking as that may be :).

"Toys my kids pilfer from mother earth"-- I love it!
There is something really peaceful about cleaning. In a lot of things in our lives, we don't see results right away, or the results aren't something tangible. Sometimes it can be really relaxing to do something simple with our hands, and to see the results right away!
And kudos to you for letting your chicks clean rocks on your wooden floors with just a little tea towel- I'm impressed :)
That's a great idea! E loves to clean! I am going to try this!!!!!
Hi, I'm a new follower! I'm enjoying your blog!

I agree with Lisa - I can't imagine letting my boys do this indoors. The times we've done this was on the kitchen table under a thick layer of tablecloths ;)
Though, we're enjoying a lot of "washing" outdoors now that it's nice. The mess and splashing is part of the fun. Today, the boys practiced throwing rocks into the "washing" bowl just to see which ones would make the biggest splash!
It may look like a tea towel, but it's actually a very, very thick bathroom hand towel :). We do so many washing projects indoors, but they are often on the table or in the bathroom.
We've definitely been doing more water play outside though, thankfully, since it's finally warm!
Great idea again mama! Will have to file it away for sure! <3
Hugs-
