Happy Fall, Y'all!

This afternoon and evening, in honor of the autumnal equinox, the chicks and I had our own personal fall festival, or "festi-bull" as it's known in chick parlance, a pronunciation I hope they continue to use for at least five more years.

After a leaf-collection walk, we made leaf crowns using the instructions in Carol Petrash's Earthways, my new favorite kids' crafting book.

Spotted: wood fairies--

I'm a bit too tired for a tutorial, but the project is pretty easy.  You simply collect leaves, snip off the stems, and then "pin" them together end-to-end using the stems you removed.  We found we needed to poke a small hole in the leaves before inserting the stem.  Here's one crown-in-progress:

We then played with snails, whom we will miss over the winter.  Montreal has the best snails, in abundance:

Ninna built them a habitat using the leftover leaves:

We harvested what we could from the yard, which today meant a single cherry tomato, and two large handfuls of beans from our still-lush and very prolific bean teepee:

We finished the evening with a candlelight "harvest dinner," in the company of more early fall leaves and bowls of shiny chestnuts the chicks have been gathering on our walks home from school:

I hope your first day of fall was as lovely as ours!

Lovely! Do you roast the chestnuts the chicks pick up? We used to do that when I lived in France.

Just sent you an email, but I think the subject somehow got sent off as "O" instead of "Montreal". I'm having computer issues...

Man, I wish I had done something to celebrate the autumn equinox! Looks like you ladies had a lovely day/evening, and how exciting that you can still be sleeveless in autumntime Montreal! -Jill

So fun to get caught up on your lovely lives. The crafting! I loved the fairy leaf garland best, no, the rainbow heart garland. Oh, so much to love.
How is your big girl doing in kindergarten?

Wow! So cute! I love the whole post, and I'm totally making those crowns with my girls. The leaves really haven't changed enough yet though. Maybe we will make them for our ancestors celebration.

Scavenging in the fall is the best! What a fun way to construct a crown. Happy autumn to you and the chicks!

Lovely to read of your celebrations, and helps to make the girls aware of their relationship with the environment and with food that they grow, etc. I meant to have a Spring Equinox celebration (being in the souther hemisphere, but time and events got away from me. Will keep in mind the summer solstice however.

I love that snail photo, how sweet! We get lots of snails here too in Oregon.
Autumn is so lovely, I hope you and your family enjoy it to the fullest.

Just found your blog and am glad that I did! I'm newly divorce and a single parent of two that is trying to balance motherhood, career, my coaching business ... and running marathons! Looking forward to learning how to balance it all from you!

MaryAnne--We didn't roast the chestnuts, and I'm so glad, because I later learned they are horse chestnuts! I've never had roasted chestnuts, but it did cross my mind. Now I know to make sure to choose the right ones if we ever do.

Jill--it has actually been kind of unseasonable warm. It's just now getting cool. You should join us for one of our seasonal celebrations! We have a fondue candlelight dinner for winter solstice and a summer solstice tea party every year. We're just starting to add things in for fall and spring.

Stacy--thanks! And I think the girls did have fun, as did I. It's nice to actually sit down with them outside for some quality time instead of just having them play while I "accomplish things" :).

Rachel--kindergarten...well, it's school. It comes with all kinds of issues. In my fantasy land, we're dropping in on your hippie homeschool co-op. In my reality, there are worksheets, coloring in the lines, and TV shows at school. Sigh.

dandelionlady--I'm really curious about your ancestors celebration (as is my mom, who reads the comments!) The crowns were satisfying to make, but I pretty much just made them myself for the girls. They'd definitely be challenging for Bojey, if even possible. Ninna could probably do it, but I just chose to do them myself.

KJ--you aren't kidding about the fall scavenging. We've picked up so many interesting things for crafting and playing, and there is still so much more collecting we can do before the snow.

Laura--Thanks! At the time I posted this, the trees were just starting to change. It's been late here, too, I guess because of the weather.

nocton4--yes, I love autumn. Even the smells, both indoors and out.

Duckie--yes, we really enjoy our seasonal celebrations. Just pick something simple and start a tradition! I find that once we do something just once, it's so easy to get into the habit.

Heidi--I'm glad you found me! I love the pacific northwest.

Jamie--It's nice to have company on this challenging journey, isn't it? I'm not sure I'm the best example of balance (hence the huge gap between blog posts!), but I learn a little more every day.

Impossible Mom--Hmm...not sure what a pin-back button is! I will look that up and get back to you. I don't have a badge, but I'm planning to make one. I've gotten this question before and actually found a good tutorial for one. I'll try to get on that this week!

A lovely and simple idea.....I like the table as well. So good to remember those things, even when the children are older!
