Pumpkins with Wigs: A Simple, Silly Halloween Project

A couple of weeks ago, the chicks painted small pumpkins at our little friend's birthday party.  The next day, unbeknownst to me, they decided to wash the paint off, which is somehow perfectly logical to me knowing my children, though I can't possibly explain why.  It's just exactly the sort of thing they would do.  And so we've had these cute little plain pumpkins sitting around.

It also so happens that in our neighborhood, people go to great lengths with their Halloween decorations. I think I've mentioned this before, but it rivals Christmas decorations, and, in some cases, exceeds them.  Every time we walk down our street, my little DIY-er three year old says "I want to make that Halloweeny."  When I ask what, specifically, she points to a yard and says "all of it."

About half a block down, there are foam jack-o-lanterns wearing some kind of wig-type things, and they top Bojey's list of Hallweenys to make, so I suggested that the chicks add hair to their washed and tidy little pumpkins.
What we did is not really even worthy of a tutorial because it's so easy, but here it is in a nutshell:

1.  Draw a face on the pumpkin with a sharpie.

2.  Glue on some sort of hair-like substance.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.  My girls used a combination of uncarded wool (from a family friend's farm) and various colors of dyed wool roving.  You could also use yarn, string, strips of fabric, cornsilk--anything you can think of, really.  I would recommend using a strong glue like Aleene's tacky glue or something similar, since I don't think simple Elmer's school glue will be strong enough.

Those are cute, and very Halloweeny!

I could see my kids washing pumpkins like this, too.

I love the picture you got of your girls working on their pumpkins - they are so cute in their hats!

MaryAnne--Thanks! And I love them in the hats. It's cold, and I'm really trying to keep utility costs down, so I'm REQUIRING hats, layers, and slippers at all times. I don't always get cooperation, but it's become more second-nature.

Jill--Ahh, the wig! We still have it, but I failed to do the photo after the second year or so :(. All the other photos I take will have to suffice!

Impossible Mom--thanks :).

E--I crack up every time I look at the pumpkins. The hats: the one on Bojey was knit by their grandma for Korinna when she was two years old. The other is an old cheapie one from Target from like ten years ago. I'm going to have to knit Ninna a simple indoor hat!
